U.S. Beef exports took off in the 1990's, becoming one of the true success stories in U.S. agricultural trade. Previous to the 1990's, the United States was the largest beef importer in the world. Now, the United States exports over 80 percent of what it imports, and the U.S. trade surplus (exports minus imports) in beef exceeds $1.0 billion annually.
