Strong Production Growth
in Brazil Stimulates Exports
The Brazilian production forecast
for MY 2000/01 increased to 3.7 million bales, 20 percent above
the MY1999/00 revised estimate of 3.1 million, and nearly triple
the 1996/97 level. Imports, which accounted for over 60 percent
of consumption in MY1996/97, now account for less than 25 percent
as production increases continue to outpace strong consumption
growth of the past 4 years. Likewise, exports are expected to
increase significantly for the first time in several years, due
to sales of cotton orginating in Mato Grosso.
