Netherlands: Since 1998, Dutch imports of leaf tobacco have increased steadily to 92,000 metric tons in 2001. Leaf imports in 2002 are forecast to total 65,000 tons, down 28 percent from 2001. This 28-percent decrease is attributed to surplus stocks. NL2036

Tobacco Auction Update: Zimbabwe’s Tobacco Marketing
Board reported that 78,420 tons of flue-cured was sold after fourteen weeks of
the auction season for an average price of U.S.$2.10 per kilogram.
This is down 6 percent in volume and 9 percent in value from 2001.
U.S. DEVELOPMENTS
Flue-Cured: Through the third week of sales of the 2002 season, gross flue-cured sales reached 211 million pounds, including contracted sales, at an average price of $1.82 per pound.
