Thai Rice Exports Surge on Nigeria's Record Imports in 2001
(Million
Metric Tons)
In 2001, despite ample global
supplies and sluggish import demand outside of Africa, Thailand's
exports are estimated to reach a record 7.5 million tons, in part
the result of competitive prices and high quality rice. A key
factor in the export surge is Nigeria, where a poor harvest and
higher prices for traditional crops have significantly boosted
consumption and, consequently, imports. While Thailand has
traditionally been a small supplier to Nigeria, since 1995 their
market share has increased rapidly and reached record sales in
2001.
Although Nigeria's imports are projected to decline in 2002,
Thailand is expected to remain a major supplier.
