Travel Management

Crescent Ranger District

Three Trails Off Highway Vehicle Analysis Area

Currently, there are no designated Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) trails on the Crescent Ranger District. The District would like to develop a designated trail system in a suitable and sustainable location that provides opportunities for a variety of OHV users.

The Three Trails analysis area on the Crescent Ranger District was originally identified by the Travel Management Working Group formed in 2006-2007 on the Deschutes and Ochoco National Forests. The Working Group was developed to address options and criteria for providing motorized access for dispersed camping within the boundaries established by the rule; and to identify areas that could be considered for developing specialized motorized trail systems.

The Three Trails analysis area is approximately 75,000 acres. It includes the areas around Crescent Lake Junction, Two Rivers Subdivision south and east to Boundary Springs Campground. The District Interdisciplinary Planning Team envisions three, interlocking trail systems and a major staging area affiliated with each system. The proposed staging areas include the Junction Snow Park near Crescent Lake Junction, an area known as Mowich at the end of Forest Road 5852150 and Boundary Springs Campground. (Note: The Mowich Staging area was recently proposed in place of Mushroom Camp. However, our maps have not yet been changed to reflect this new information.)

The Crescent Ranger District is in the process of asking the public what routes they would like designated. Several public meetings have been held in 2008, one in June and two in September. So far the publics have expressed interest in Class I, II and III opportunities. The main users of this area are local communities and members of the public from the Willamette Valley and Klamath Falls. Enthusiasts from Prineville as well as Bend have also taken an interest in the area and are identifying desired routes.

There is concern from local residents as well as the environmental community with the designation of trails in this analysis area. Their concerns generally include riders getting lost within neighborhoods, damage to resources, vehicular road/trail densities, disturbance to wildlife and displacement of or conflict with other current Forest uses.

The attached comments are from the public meetings only. Written comments submitted to the District have not been incorporated.
