New & Updated Publications

We add new titles to our extensive list of sustainable agriculture publications throughout the year. Also, our sustainable agriculture specialists update existing titles on a regular basis, to make sure that the information they contain continues to be relevant and useful. Take a look at our most recent updates and new publications, available on this Web site:

Sources of Organic Fertilizers and Amendments
[HTML]

This publication has been updated and is now in the form of a searchable online database. This resource list is a guide to suppliers of bulk organic fertilizers and specialty soil and foliar amendments, and is geared to commercial farmers and market gardeners—especially organic producers. Sources are categorized by product type, and thus it also serves as an educational overview of the different organic fertilizers, biostimulants, inoculants, rock minerals, and other amendments available.

Soil Management: National Organic Program Regulations
[PDF / 900 kb]

The National Organic Program Rule, §205.203, Soil Fertility and Crop Nutrient Management Practice Standard, does not define specific land practices that producers must use. But it does identify general soil management and environmental protection objectives. From these objectives, producers and the organic certifiers they work with must determine whether specific farming practices meet the NOP criteria. This publication released in July 2005 provides management guidelines for meeting, and measurable parameters for monitoring, these objectives. It also discusses why these objectives are essential for maintaining sustainable, organic production systems.

Seed Production and Variety Development for Organic Systems
[PDF / 762 kb]

Most of the research to develop seed varieties specifically for organic production is in public and participatory breeding, and good technical material from such research is increasingly available. The USDA has also funded workshops to teach farmers the principles of participatory breeding for organics, to increase the availability of organic seed. In 2005, however, although there are breeding programs underway, no seed varieties bred specifically for organic production are commercially available. This 2005 publication looks at how seed is produced for the commercial market, discusses organic seed requirements for organic production, and addresses GMO contamination and testing for contamination.
