Researcher Ekhard Ziegler (EK'-hard ZIG'-luhr) of the University of Iowa says a lack of vitamin D can lead to rickets, a condition in which bones are softened and weakened, although the study did not determine if rickets developed in the Iowa babies.

"Severe vitamin D deficiency can lead to rickets, and we cannot be sure that some of our babies didn’t have a mild form of rickets." (eight seconds)
