Coming up short

From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I'm Ray Sass with HHS HealthBeat.

A study says diabetes care is coming up short, despite improvement over the last decade.

The report in Annals of Internal Medicine compared data on diabetes care from 1995 to recent data. Researchers found progress, but many patients still have poor control of cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar.

Researcher Jinan Saaddine of HHS' Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises:

"Be sure to conduct a healthy lifestyle with a good diet, regular exercise. Recommended yearly eye exam and foot exam are also important. Conducting a healthy lifestyle is equally important for the 41 million with pre-diabetes to help prevent or delay this devastating disease." (19 seconds)

Of Americans born in the year 2000, 1 in 3 will develop diabetes during their lifetime.
