Research Project: GENETIC TRANSFORMATION OF SOME PATHOGENESIS RELATED GENES FOR FUNGAL RESISTANCE IN GRAIN LEGUMES (FABA BEAN AND PEA)

Location: Grain Legume Genetics Physiology Research

Project Number: 5348-21000-024-06
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Sep 01, 2007
End Date: Aug 31, 2009

Objective:
The objective is to introduce recombinant anti-fungal genes into faba bean and pea to improve the resistance level against fungal diseases. Formerly 5348-21000-014-15R (04/08)

Approach:
Recombinant DNA technology based on Agrobacterium tumefaciens will be used to transfer anti-fungal genes into faba bean and pea. The chitinase gene from Streptomyces olivaceoviridis and the antimicrobial gene, AMP1, from Allium will be used to establish fungal resistance. Positive transformants and functional gene expression will be verified using Polymerase chain reaction, southern analysis, northern analysis and protein expression methodology. Positive transformants will be challenged with fungal pathogens such as Aphanomyces euteiches, and Fusarium ssp. to evaluate gene function and level of resistance. Documents Reimbursable with US-Egypt Joint Board on Scientific & Technological Cooperation. Log 32305. Formerly 5348-21000-014-15R (5/08).
