SANDIA RANGER DISTRICT ANNOUNCES WINTER CLOSURE OF THE UPPER SECTION OF LA LUZ TRAIL
Albuquerque, November 25, 2008 – The Sandia Ranger District announced the closure of the upper section of the La Luz trail (Trail 137) due to unsafe weather and trail conditions. The trail will be closed between the upper terminal of the Sandia Peak Tram and the intersection of the Crest Spur trail (Trail 84). Posted signs will direct the public to utilize the Crest Trail (TR 130) from the upper tram to the Sandia Crest Spur trail to rejoin the La Luz trail. With winter approaching and the weather that is predicted for the Thanksgiving holiday, travel along this section of the trail would be hazardous and is considered extremely unsafe for hikers (especially in the areas where the trail is extremely narrow). The condition of the trail will be evaluated in the spring when snow and ice is no longer a concern and it is safe to reopen for hiking.
For more information regarding the status of the La Luz trail closure please contact Lisa Jones of the Sandia Ranger District at 505-281-3304.
