Current Events in the Sierra National Forest

  • Holiday Office Closures:
    • Sierra National Forest Service offices in Prather, North Fork and Clovis will be closed January 1, 2008, in observance of the New Year’s Day Holiday
    • Sierra National Forest Service offices in Prather, North Fork and Clovis will be closed January 19, 2008, in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Holiday.
  • Recent Winter Road Closures:
    • The Sierra Vista National Scenic Byway as well as many routes through the Bass Lake Ranger District are now under snow, and have closed for the winter season. Miami Motorcycle trails area remains open. If you plan to travel into the Sierra National Forest, take note that weather conditions may be extreme and roads may quickly become wet, muddy and icy. Be sure to pack tire chains when traveling through the Forest and leave an itinerary with a close family member or friend.
  • Skiing:
    • Winter storms continue to bring snow to Sierra Summit Ski Resort. The entire mountain is open for skiing recreation. For information about skiing at Sierra Summit Ski Resort, please visit www.sierrasummit.com. Or call the 24 hour
      snow report at (559) 233-3330.

General Summary
The winter snow creates exiting opportunities to discover the Sierra National Forest through snowmobiling, Nordic, Alpine or Cross Country skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, dog sledding, snow camping or just playing in the snow. It's a wonderful time of the year! Rancheria Campground at Huntington Lake is open during the winter months for snow camping. Restroom facilities are available near the entrance to the campground. Remember to pack out what you pack in.

Forest visitors will find snow pack at elevations 5,000 feet and higher. All snow park areas in the Sierra National Forests, along Highway 168 above Shaver Lake, or along Highway 41 near Yosemite National Park, are open for use. Sno-Park Permits are required for parking in a Sno-Park area from November 1st through May 30th. Permits are $5.00 per day or $25.00 per season. For additional information about skiing, snowmobiling, and snow play opportunities, or for a list of Sno-park vendors, contact your local Sierra National Forest office or visit the Sierra National Forest website at http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/sierra/recreation/wintersports/index.shtml.

Access, Senior and Annual Pass

The Access and Senior Passes provide discounts for the permanently disabled and for citizens over 62 years of age.  The Annual Pass allows you to pay one yearly fee for access into federal sites such as national parks.  Permits can be obtained at Sierra National Forest Offices.
