Digital Photography
Tracer Bullet 95-2 |
|
Digital photography is the computer representation of an object.
As a relatively new field, it marks the first really fundamental
change in both the concept of photography and its technology.
Since its invention some 150 years ago, photography has traditionally
involved the chemical reaction of photosensitive materials. While
digital photography still can include this traditional silver
halide chemistry, it also embraces the fields of computers, telecommunications,
image processing, and color science.
All systems of image digitization work by dividing an image
into dots or pixels, giving each dot a value, and then storing
these values in sequence in a computer. Computers reconstruct
the digital image by reading the dot values and displaying them
on a computer screen. Digitized photographs can be stored, viewed,
copied or otherwise manipulated on the computer. Although digitized
photographs are immune to wear or distortion caused by handling
and/or repeated use, they do require very large computer files
to store them. As the technology evolves to perhaps reduce this
storage problem, other technical, legal, and policy issues also
arise that pose additional challenges.
This bibliography does not attempt to be comprehensive in all
aspects or in its examination of all the available resources.
Rather, this guide to the literature of digital photography is
designed -- as the name of the series implies -- to put the reader
"on target."
