On west side of East Fork arm of Trinity Lake, Hayward Flat is two and half miles off Highway 3 and 20 miles north of Weaverville. The campground is shaded with tall stands of fir and pine. Camp host is available to provide information.

There are free, summer interpretive programs at this facility.

History: Hayward Flat Campground is on a portion of the "Unity Mine".  It was once the site of the Minersville Post Office which was moved to this location from old Minersville in 1860. The Unity Mine was part of Hayward Flat Mines.  A very large boarding house and other buildings belonging to the mine lined the west side of the old road to Trinity Center which now lies under the waters of Trinity Lake.

Early in the second half of the 19th century, lode and placer claims were in operation here. As time went on lode claims became unprofitable and activities centered entirely around the hydraulic placer for working them and was brought by ditch from Stuart Fork just two miles away.

Located 29 miles north of Weaverville on Highway 3 and two miles south of Trinity Center. The campground borders Swift Creek, a good stream for fishing. It is situated primarily in a young incense cedar forest. There is a boat ramp at nearby Trinity Center for lake activities.  Boating and swimming available nearby.

Located near units 3 and 7 are three large ponderosa pines with unique scars.  The scars do not appear to be from a natural fire.  Fire burns from the ground up and usually leaves a wide irregular shaped scar approximately two to three feet off the ground.  If lighting hits a tree, the resulting scar is usually spiraled and in the upper half of the tree.

The most likely explanation is the scars were man-caused.  Forest Service archaeologists think local Wintu Indians made the scars probably about 100 years ago.  During hard times, Indians often relied upon the inner cambium layer of the ponderosa pine as a food source.  To obtain the cambium, the Indians took a chipped stone artifact or trade ax (metal) and repeatedly pulled down on the outer bark until the inner layer was reached.  The resulting scar is elliptical in shape about 5 to 6 feet in length, 2 feet wide at the widest point, and about 4 feet of the ground.  The reason for this size and shape is because an average adult would have exerted the most force at shoulder height and slacked off at the top and bottom in order to conserve energy.  Old timers tell us that Preacher Meadow Camp was established as a small single loop well before the dam was constructed.

Tannery Gulch is only 11 miles north of Weaverville,  It is nestled in tall pines, Douglas-firs and oaks.  It offers a half mile hiking trail, interpretive programs during the summer season, boat ramp and swim beach.  Trout, bass, and catfish can be caught along the shoreline.

Tannery Gulch received its name from the Bartlett and Company Tannery. It was built in 1865 at the mouth of the creek where it joins the Stuart Fork. It was the only tannery in the county and consisted of a water race, a bark mill, and 32 tanning vats. Bark from trees, plentiful in the area, was used in the tanning process. According to Isaac Cox, who traveled through the country, in 1858 the hides were bought for $2 each and sold for 40 cents per pound. This enterprise was eventually put out of business by "outside" competition.

Stoney Creek 10/50 $75.00 5/1 - 9/30 flush N/A yes 5/1 - 9/30
On Highway 3, 13 miles north of Weaverville and 15 miles south of Trinity Center. This campground does not sit right on the shores of Trinity Lake. It is across the highway from the lake on Stoney Creek. Located in an open stand of Douglas-fir and pine, this facility has been popular with groups that include children. The open timber stand allows for good visibility. The creek swimming area, although colder than the lake, makes it easier than a lakeshore beach for monitoring children.  There is a central parking area with ten individual tent-only camp units within easy walking distance.  There are no individual parking spurs. Group area has barbeque, fire ring, and picnic tables.

Length of Stay:  Camping at all campgrounds is limited to no more than 14 days.  Camping outside of improved campgrounds (dispersed camping) is limited to thirty (30) days within a one (1) year period, starting with the first day of occupancy.  Seasons for campgrounds at Trinity and Shasta lakes are based on use and water levels.

Fees: Family campground fees vary, depending on the types of services offered.  There is a $5.00 charge for second vehicle at Tannery, Hayward Flat, and Alpine View on Trinity Lake.  If you possess a Golden Age or a Golden Access Passport, you will be entitled to a 50% discount on use fees with the exception of fees for group camps.  You will be required to show the passport when you arrive at the campground.

Capacity: Developed campground maximum capacity for single units: 1 vehicle and 8 people.  Double units: 2 vehicles and 12 people.  Triple units: 3 vehicles and 16 people.

Pets: Pets are allowed in the recreation areas unless posted.  They must be on a leash when in a developed site.
