ATTACHMENT 16 Simplified Format, Vertical Display
SIMPLIFIED FORMAT 101.9(f) This simplified format may be used if seven(7) or more of the following nutrients are present in "insignificant amounts": calories, total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, total carbohydrates, dietary fiber, sugars, protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, and iron. Foods meeting this criteria may use the simplified format, regardless of package size. 101.9(f)(1) defines "insignificant amount" as the amount that allows a declaration of zero in nutrition labeling, except that for total carbohydrates, dietary fiber, and protein it shall be the amount that allows a declaration of "less than 1 gram". There are five core nutrients, (calories, total fat, sodium, total carbohydrates, and protein), that must be listed regardless of the quantity present. Label sample A shows the simplified format when there are no added or voluntarily declared nutrients. The nutrients listed in sample B include core nutrients as well as nutrients that were included either voluntarily or because of the presence of a claim. (*) Core nutrients that must be declared regardless of the amount present in the food Sample A (Soft drink) Sample B (Vegetable Oil) Note: When nutrients naturally present in the food are voluntarily declared and/or when products are enriched or when claims are made about a nutrient, additional requirement apply 101.9(f)(4) 101.9(f)(5) - required statement in lieu of footnote ATTACHMENT 16 48 ATTACHMENT 17 SIMPLIFIED TABULAR DISPLAY 101.9 (J) (13) (ii) (A)
The simplified tabular display may be used on any size package of food which qualifies for the simplified format when there is not sufficient vertical space to accommodate the vertical simplified format. 49
ATTACHMENT 18 LINEAR DISPLAYS
The linear display may be used on packages with 40 or less square inches of available space only if the label will not accommodate the tabular display 101.9(j) (13) (ii) (A)
Bolding is required only for "Nutritional Facts". Bolding is voluntary for nutrient names, calories, total fat, cholesterol, sodium, total carbohydrates, and protein [101.9(j)(13)(ii)(A)(2) - August 18, 1993]. Footnote is not required 101.9(j)(13)(ii)(C) Abbreviations may be used. Abbreviations, listed below were revised in the August 18, 1993 Federal Register [101.9(j)(13)(ii)(B)]. ATTACHMENT 19 SHORTENED FORMAT (Permitted on any size package and format)
The shortened format allows nutrients that are present at insignificant levels to be listed following the statement "Not a significant source of ___". One or more of the nutrients that quality for such a declaration are listed in the order in which they would have been listed in the regular format. (e.g., "Not a significant source of calories from fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, dietary fiber, sugars, vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium and iron". This statement may be printed in 6 point type.
The footnote can be used with any format, to list one or more of
the following nutrients:
Calories from fat: when the food contains less than 5 calories from fat.
[21 CFR 101.9(C)(1)(ii)]
Saturated fat: when the food contains less than 0.5 grams of total fat
per serving and if no claims are made about far or cholesterol content,
and if no claims are made about calories from fat. [21 CFR 101.9(C)(2)(I)]
Cholesterol: when the food contains less than 2 milligrams cholesterol
per serving, and makes no claim about fat, fatty acids or cholesterol.
[21 CFR 101.9(C)(3)]
Dietary Fiber: when a serving contains less than 1 gram of dietary fiber.
[21 CFR 101.9(C)(6)(I)]
