Recreation Fee Proposals

Campground, group campground and recreational rental fee increase proposals for 2008

The Forest Service is proposing between $2 and $6 increases in fees for camping in many campgrounds and from $3 to $65 fee increases for some group camps and rental cabins on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest to help cover the steadily increasing costs of maintaining facilities and providing services and experiences visitors enjoy. New fees are also being proposed at several locations so the forest can continue to provide services at these sites.

"These proposed increases are not arbitrary," said Tracy. "They are based on market research and operational analyses."

All proposed fee increases will be reviewed by a citizen's advisory committee that makes recommendations on creating new or changing existing recreation fees managed by the Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in California . Advice and recommendation from the Recreation Resource Advisory Committee is combined with other public notification and communication efforts to provide balanced public input to the agency.

"It has been about 10 years since the fees have been increased for most campgrounds and at least five years for rental facilities," said Assistant Public Uses Officer Brenda Tracy. "We can not continue to provide experiences people enjoy by collecting far less than it costs to maintain these facilities and services."

The proposed fee increases apply to 14 of 84 developed campgrounds, 4 of 9 developed group campgrounds and 5 of 6 recreation rentals on the forest. The varying fees are based on services and amenities available at the sites or facilities.

"The overall goal is to provide better services for the recreating public and to protect investments that have been made at these sites," said Tracy.

* The variability of the fees is based on the services and amenities provided at each site.

** Due to the historic designation of many of the lookouts and guard stations (cabins), costs for maintenance, repair and replacement is significantly higher than non-historic facilities. These sites must be managed in accordance with standards and guidelines to ensure their protection and historic preservation.

Extra vehicle fees are being proposed at several campgrounds where space is a premium.   If all sites are full at these locations, and everyone brings an extra vehicle, there isn’t enough room to park and resources are being impacted.

Mount Shasta Summit Pass Program

Recreation managers at the Shasta-Trinity National Forest are interested in hearing your comments on a proposal to increase the Mount Shasta Summit Single Climb Pass from $15 to $20 in 2008 and to $25 in 2010. The $15 fee has been at the current level since 1997.

According to Forest Service officials, the fee increase would both be consistent with inflationary costs as well as ensure that fees are more comparable to other climbing passes.

"We recognize how important Mount Shasta is to our local communities and those who climb the summit. The fee increase will help us maintain the level and quality of services people have come to expect," said Mike Hupp, district ranger on the Shasta McCloud Management Unit.

Ninety-five percent of the funds collected at Mount Shasta remain at Mount Shasta to operate, maintain and improve the climbing program.
