ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The Capital and the Bay: Narratives of Washington and the Chesapeake Bay Region, ca. 1600-1925 is the work of many dedicated people.

First and foremost, thanks to team leader Steven C. McCollum and to Christopher J. Pohlhaus and Elizabeth Gettins, members of the General Collections team of the National Digital Library Program (NDLP), whose diligent work on every aspect of the collection was primarily the reason for its successful completion. All were instrumental in selecting the works to be included and contributed endless hours of collation, database development, administrative work, and image and text review; Steve McCollum also coordinated all aspects of collection development from start to finish.

A special thanks to Jurretta Jordan Heckscher, former team leader of the General Collections team and current head of the NDLP editorial team, for her wise guidance in the selection process and subsequent digitization efforts. Her intimate knowledge of the cultural history of the Chesapeake Bay region provided a sound basis upon which to make selections.

Tracey Salley of the NDLP Web design team did the interface design for the collection site, which includes the collection home page and the special presentation. David Woodward provided the programming that enables the search engine, browse lists, and page-turner, as well as other site functions. Danna Bell-Russell coordinated publicity efforts.

The collection was edited by Jurretta Heckscher and Emily Lind Baker. They provided valuable suggestions to correct the style and substance of the written framework materials. In addition, Heckscher wrote the Special Presentation essay that will accompany the collection online.

Thanks also to Donna Marie Chambers, Valencia Bullock, Art Brown, and Dan Pence of Systems Integration Group (SIG) of Lanham, Maryland, for scanning the collection and administering the SGML text conversion.

Finally, thanks to the many people who provided technical and managerial support behind the scenes, including Martha Anderson, Beth Davis-Brown, Nancy Eichacker, Ariel Rosenblum, and Tamara Swora-Gober.
