Ackerman Calls for U.S. Support Against Terrorism in Algeria and Morocco

(Washington, DC) - Rep. Gary L. Ackerman (D-Queens/L.I.) today condemned the recent terrorist violence in Algeria and Morocco and called for U.S. assistance to combat recent attacks by Islamist terrorists.  To demonstrate his concern and regard for Algeria and Morocco, Ackerman, the Chairman of the House Subcommittee of the Middle East and South Asia, joined as a cosponsor of a House Resolution (H.Res.310) on the subject of the attacks.

“We’re talking about one two countries that are valuable allies in the fight against terrorism.  The United States’ top priority should be to support the governments there who are actually working with us in order to restore peace and security and to dismantle the jihadi networks that plan and carry out such attacks,” said Ackerman.

Both Algeria and Morocco have been subject to a series of terrorist attacks, the most recent being in Casablanca, Morocco, on April 10 and 14, 2007, and in Algiers, Algeria, on April 11, 2007.  The bombings have focused on state official targets and have been claimed by al-Qaida.
