Ackerman Honors Suffragette Martha Coffin Wright

(Washington, DC) - Rep. Gary L. Ackerman (D-Queens/L.I.) today honored the life and legacy of suffragette Martha Coffin Wright and her recent induction to the National Women’s Hall of Fame by joining in Congressional efforts to honor the New York suffragette.

“I am proud to honor anyone as steadfast in her beliefs, forward-thinking in her politics and true to the ideals of this country as Martha Coffin Wright,” said Ackerman. "The resolution to honor her contributions to our society and her efforts to achieve equality for more than half of our population is long overdue. I'm proud to part of this initiative."

Martha Coffin Wright, with her sister Lucretia Coffin Mott and activist Elizabeth Cady Stanton, was one of five organizers of the First Women’s Rights Convention in Seneca Falls, New York in 1848.  The historic convention produced the “Declaration of Sentiments,” modeled on the Declaration of Independence, which for the first time publicly demanded equal rights and suffrage for women.  She also was an active member of the abolition movement, opening her home to the Underground Railroad, and a founding member of the American Anti-Slave Society.
