LLNL’s Discovery
Center
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) takes great
pride in contributing to the nation’s security—and
equal pride in being a good neighbor in our
local communities. More than 3,300 of our 7,800 employees
live in the Tri-Valley and another 1,500 live in the San Joaquin
County. We are the largest employer in the City of Livermore
and the fourth largest employer in Alameda County. We are
also one of the largest employers of City of Tracy residents.
In the local communities of Alameda, Contra Costa and San
Joaquin counties, the Lab generates an annual payroll of $691
million. Our total annual payroll for all employees is nearly
$778 million.
Lab employees are active in a broad range of
civic, educational, and professional organizations
at the local, regional, state, and national
levels. They also give generously to the community through
extensive volunteer work and charitable donations. Our annual
employee charitable fund-raising drive, the HOME (Helping Others More Effectively) Campaign, raises more than more
than $1 million in employee pledges annually. Lawrence Livermore
National Security, LLC (LLNS), our managing contractor,
matches up to $1 million in employee pledges, making LLNL
one of the largest charitable contributors in the region.
In our most recent HOME Campaign that concluded in December
2007, employees pledged more than $1.4 million. With the
LLNS match of $1 million, local charities are receiving
$2.4 million from the Laboratory. LLNL has also been recognized
as the leading fundraiser in the Greater Bay Area for the
American Cancer Society’s annual Daffodil
Days campaign, as well as the largest Northern California
donor to the annual American Red Cross blood drive.
Community Relations & Educational Outreach
Our Community & Education
Programs office works to foster greater public
awareness of the Laboratory’s mission and improve
science education through mutually beneficial relationships
with local government, civic groups, school districts,
and citizens. It is responsive to community inquiries
and concerns, sharing information and facilitating
communication. To help strengthen science education,
it offers a variety of educational outreach programs
for local students and teachers. To find out more
about the Laboratory’s community ties, visit
our Community & Education
Programs web site.
Business Opportunities
About
one-third of the Lab’s $1.6 billion annual
operating budget is spent on the procurement of goods
and services - an amount in excess of $611 million.
Companies interested in doing business with the Laboratory
should refer to the Business Opportunities web
site.
LLNL also is a leader in technology
transfer to the private sector. We have active commercial
licenses with 537 companies, 96 of which are in California.
Companies interested in commercialization partnerships
should refer to our Industrial
Partnerships Office.
See for Yourself!
Even though we have been a member
of the community for more than 55 years, much of what
we do at the Laboratory is not readily apparent to
our neighbors. Our public web site highlights our scientific
and engineering research, as well as our activities
in and on behalf of our local communities. The best
way to learn more about the Laboratory is to visit
us. Our Discovery
Center is open Tuesday through Friday from 1 p.m.
to 4 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In
addition, community
tours for adults are offered several days a week.

LLNL routinely monitors the air,
water, and soil at and near the Laboratory to ensure that its research projects do not adversely affect the public or the environment.
