Benefits

HR-303 Educational Assistance

Summary

Seventy-five percent of the educational fee is waived for any eligible employee registering for not more than six (6) credit hours of University of Missouri college level credit courses per semester (three (3) credit hours in the summer session). Activity fees, books, and other expenses are the responsibility of the participating employee.

Eligibility

All regular employees and employees retired from the University of Missouri are eligible to participate. Those employees not eligible to participate in the program include employees on unpaid leave of absence, students and employees in positions considered to be student employment (including, but not limited to Graduate Teaching Assistants, Graduate Research Assistants, Graduate Instructors, and Student Assistants.)

Administrative, Service and Support employees must have completed six (6) months continuous employment immediately prior to regular registration. This condition may be waived if the course work is part of the required job training.

Fee Waivers

During the summer session or intersession, the number of hours a full-time, nine (9)-month appointed employee who does not hold a summer session appointment may register for under this program is limited only by the number of hours allowed by the campus.

Full-time, professional extension field staff may receive educational assistance benefits for up to 15 credit hours for the semester of approved study under the Semester Study on Full Salary Program. These benefits cannot be used for more than 15 credit hours during any academic year (September 1 - August 31).

The entire educational fee is waived when an employee audits a course, either on the employee's initiative, or at the request of the department. The educational fee is not waived when a participant audits a course offered through the Center for Independent Study or MU Direct: Continuing & Distance Education. Employees registering for more than six (6) credit hours per semester three (3) hours during the summer session or intersession) must schedule the additional class hours during nonworking hours and must pay the full educational fee for the additional hours.

Conditions

Only University of Missouri credit courses are covered. All participants must: file an application for admission; meet student admission requirements; and remain a University employee through the end of the course(s) in which enrolled.

For retired employees, registration in any given course is contingent on there being space available. Provided class space is available, all of the educational and student activity fees are waived for any eligible retired employee registering for any college level credit courses except from the Center for Independent Study and MU Direct: Continuing and Distance Learning.

Except under unusual circumstances, the waiver of the educational fee is allowed only at the time of registration - a refund will not be made later. The regular refund policy of the University applies in cases of withdrawal from a course.

Administrative, Service & Support employees must either schedule all courses during nonworking hours, or make up time lost; take an adjustment in pay; or charge time lost to vacation. Class attendance is not to take priority over work to be performed. When the department head requires that an employee register for a course directly related to assigned University responsibilities, class attendance is considered part of the regular work schedule.

All special fees, book expenses and other costs over and above the educational fee (and the student activity fee for retired employees registered in the Center for Independent Study or MU Direct: Continuing & Distance Education) must be paid by the participant. Employees who pay student activity fees are eligible for all student government association sponsored activities.

Procedures

Eligible employees must file the Educational Assistance Program Questionnaire and Authorization Form (UMUW Form 84-1). Applications from Administrative, Service & Support employees must be approved by the department head prior to final approval. Applications from Academic employees must be approved by the department head and/or the dean prior to final approval. Human Resource Services or the designated representative must approve all applications for enrollment in this program.
