Come Together for Varsity P Club Weekend

The Purdue University Athletics Department and the Varsity P Club invite all former varsity letter winners, athletes, managers, trainers and cheerleaders back to campus for Varsity P Club Weekend on October 24-25, 2008. As we recognize you for your accomplishments as a Boilermaker student-athlete, come together with your teammates and friends for a weekend filled with fun, football, reminiscing and creating more Purdue memories.

Meet your teammates and friends at Harry’s on Friday, October 24, from 4:00pm – 7:00pm as the Varsity P Club has rented out the 2nd floor.  There will be great food and a cash bar.  We will also host a tailgate located in lot Z in the northwest corner of Ross-Ade Stadium.  The tailgate will begin at 9:00 AM with catering provided by D&R Market and a cash bar.

We will have a Varsity P Club Pre-game Tunnel on the game field for active Varsity P Club members. We will also recognize our Varsity P Club group block during the football game so remember to wear your letter jackets or your Purdue gear! For those who wish to participate in the Pre-game Tunnel, all Varsity P Club members are asked to meet at the Varsity P Club tailgate tent in lot Z (NW lot next to WAZY radio stage) by 11:00 AM.  The band will perform on the North side of Ross-Ade Stadium and we will follow them as they march into the stadium.  We will be entering the stadium through the player entrance which is located on the SE side (Directly across from the IAF building).  Please make sure you are at the player entrance no later than 11:30 AM! Remember, you must have credentials provided by the Varsity P Club to access the stadium field. If you have any questions or to RSVP for the weekend’s events, please contact the John Purdue Club office at 800-213-2239 or email varsitypclub@purdue.edu.

Boilermaker Wrestling Preview

The Purdue wrestling team kicked off its 2008-09 season on Wednesday October 8, holding its first practice in generous fashion with a marathon charity run. The Boilermakers took on an extensive endurance run and took pledges for time and completion for the United Way fund.

The run started in the Blake Wrestling Center, where the team took off on a three-mile run to start the day. Upon return they climbed all the stairs in Ross-Ade Stadium, only to take off on a second three-mile run afterwards. A pair of runs up-and-down Slayter Hill was next on the list, followed by 100-yards of flipping a large tire in the Mollenkopf Center, and yet another trip around Ross-Ade. The test completed with eight minutes of biking in the Blake Wrestling Center.

Quotes from the coaches

Men's Basketball Head Coach, Matt Painter:
"We're excited to get the 2008-09 season going and Mackey Madness marks the beginning. When we decided to hold this event, we did so with the fans in mind. This is their first chance to meet this season's team. We're excited to try and pack Mackey Arena and get the 2008-09 season started off on the right foot."

Women's Basketball Head Coach, Sharon Versyp:
"Mackey Madness is a great opportunity for our fans to check out three Purdue teams in one night, getting a first look at both the men's and women's basketball teams after volleyball takes on Wisconsin in Big Ten action. We are excited to be returning to the tradition of a Midnight Madness-type event on the first day of official practice. It will be a great deal of fun for our players and for the fans and you don't have to stay up until midnight to take it all in."

Volleyball Head Coach, Dave Shondell:
"We are excited to be playing in Mackey. To go into Mackey knowing there will be a huge Boilermaker crowd for our match makes it worthwhile for us to play there instead of in the Boiler Box. The opportunity to play in front of 10 to 12 thousand additional people is worth the adjustment. Our players are counting the days."

"Mackey Madness will be a great event for Purdue. We are excited to be able to work together with both men's and women's basketball as well everyone else that will be involved. The last time we played in Mackey, a few years ago, everyone came together and made the event a great success and I expect it will be the same this time."

Kristin Phillips

A Day in the Life of Kristin Phillips

Kristin Phillips, a junior on the cross country and track teams, truly lives an endurance lifestyle! Her day typically starts at 5:27 am to make it to her morning practice by 6:00 am. After about an hour of weights, she rushes back to the apartment that she shares with two teammates and another student-athlete to get ready for the rest of her day.

“If I have a 7:30 am class, I usually make a mad dash to the shower, scarf down a bowl of cereal, and run out the door to class!” states Kristin. After morning classes, she returns home to her apartment to try and get some homework done but usually ends up taking a nap before eating lunch and going back to class. After her afternoon classes, she heads to practice, which can take anywhere from 2-3 hours, depending on the season.

“I am really proud that my son attends Purdue and I hope that I am a helpful sounding board for him. My biggest challenges were learning to manage the stress of being a full-time athlete and full-time student. I think that it is terrific that Purdue has a wide variety of student-athlete services that helps manage the multiple directions that a student-athlete must go.” -Ann Adams '82 Volleyball
