Suspicious but inactive device found on Fern Ridge Dam

Portland, Ore.-U.S. Army Corps of Engineers security officials confirmed today that a suspicious device found at Fern Ridge Dam on the Long Tom River in Lane County is a previously exploded pipe bomb.

When Corps maintenance crews at Fern Ridge Dam reported the discovery of the device Tuesday morning, the Eugene Bomb Disposal Unit was alerted and activated. Early Tuesday afternoon, bomb unit team members identified the device as an inactive (previously exploded) pipe bomb. The device was constructed from a 4 1/2- inch section of 1-inch-in-diameter galvanized pipe. It is unclear at this time when or where the bomb might have been detonated or even what type of explosives may have once filled the device.

Corps security personnel will continue to work with the dam's maintenance crews and the bomb disposal unit as they investigate this finding further.
