Oil spill reported at The Dalles Dam

Portland, Ore. - Federal dam officials reported seeing an oily sheen below The Dalles Lock and Dam today, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced.

Response crews at the dam estimate the quantity at less than 15 gallons of turbine oil, which likely originated from within the powerhouse. The sheen was spotted below the powerhouse.

Officials notified the National Response Center and state environmental agencies, and Corps maintenance crews are continuing to look into the cause of the discharge.

Response crews attempted to boom and recover the oil, but later determined the oil to be unrecoverable. The sheen eventually dissipated.
