Portland, Ore - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Bonneville Lock and Dam will celebrate National Trails Day June 5 at the Fort Cascades National Historic Trail.
Park rangers will lead guided walks of the historic trail at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. Self-guided trail brochures are available, and rangers will be stationed at the trailhead to provide information from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The trail is a one-mile loop with little elevation change. Visitors are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes and come prepared for all weather. Picnic tables are available at the trailhead, or there are restaurants located in Stevenson, Wash., or Cascade Locks, Ore.
The National Trails Day theme is "Trails and Health ... a Natural Connection." The American Hiking Society counts reducing high blood pressure and prevention of heart disease and osteoporosis as benefits of hiking.
Taking part in National Trails Day at Bonneville Lock and Dam is a great way to start or continue your fitness plan while enjoying the scenery of this picturesque historic trail.
