Corps seeks comments on jetty repairs at Tillamook Bay

PORTLAND, Ore.-The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is seeking comments on a draft environmental assessment for work to rehabilitate portions of the north and south jetties at Tillamook Bay, Ore.

The work is necessary to prevent further deterioration and subsequent loss of the jetty heads and trunks. Field measurements in 2003 determined a 384-foot loss to the north jetty and a 666-foot loss to the south jetty. Without repairs, continued deterioration of both jetties could alter the effectiveness of the jetties at Tillamook Bay.

The proposed project would require the construction of a revetment at the north jetty. Future work may include constructing caps on both the north and south jetties.

For questions or comments on the draft environmental assessment, or to request a copy of the EA, call Marci Cook at (503) 808-4765 or email at Marci.E.Cook@usace.army.mil. Comments also can be submitted my mailing them to: District Engineer, Portland District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Attn: Marci Cook, CENWP-PM-E, P.O. Box 2946, Portland, Ore., 97208-2946. You also can find the draft EA online at https://www.nwp.usace.army.mil/issues/tillamook/pubs.htm.

Comments must be postmarked by May 7, 2004, and should reference Public Notice Number CENWP-PM-E-04-01.

Over the years, the jetties have eroded from the constant force from the Pacific Ocean. Despite erosion, the jetties are still performing their function of keeping the channel deeper than its authorized depth. The proposed repair work would prevent future failures that may prevent the jetties from performing their function.

The Corps' environmental assessment complies with environmental laws and regulations, such as: the Clean Water Act of 1977; Coastal Zone Management Act; Endangered Species Act of 1973; Fish and Wildlife Coordination Act; Cultural Resources acts; and the Comprehensive and Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act.
