Corps hosts presentation on the history of Bonneville Lock and Dam

PORTLAND, Ore. – “Willow West,” a fictitious citizen of the Pacific Northwest, will visit the Bradford Island Visitor Center at Bonneville Lock and Dam on Thursday, Dec. 27.

West, portrayed by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers park ranger Jane Jackson, will reminisce about her experiences during the construction of the Bonneville Lock and Dam in the 1930s. She will focus on the dedication of Bonneville Dam in 1937 and forecast its official grand opening in 1938. Following each presentation, park rangers will give guided tours of historic Powerhouse One.

Presentations are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. in the theater visitor center. All ages are welcome.

The Bonneville Lock and Dam Visitor Center is located off Interstate Highway 84 at Exit 40 and is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

While at the dam, visitors can also visit the Oregon Department Fish and Wildlife’s fish hatchery to see how salmon are raised, and visit Herman, the 10-foot-long sturgeon.
