Water safety presentation at the Oregon State Fair

PORTLAND, Ore. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is bringing water safety to the Oregon State Fair.

Visit the pool at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., Friday, Aug. 24 and Saturday, Aug. 25 to see the 2008 line of water safety wear as life jackets are modeled on the runway in a fashion show. Also learn how to choose the best life jacket for you and make sure it fits just right.

Water safety outreach is a vital part of the Corps’ recreation mission. The District’s recreation areas, most of which are located near water, attracted more than 9.8 million visitors in fiscal year 2006. Dangers related to water-based recreation are present throughout the year. Everything from a lack of swimming skills, to the risk of hypothermia, to wearing a properly fitted lifejacket are topics the Corps discusses at events each year.

Remember – water safety saves lives. Any time you are on or in the water, always wear your life jacket!
