PORTLAND, Ore. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is hosting an opportunity for members of the media to photograph interim repair activities at the South Jetty near Astoria, Ore. The interim repairs are nearly complete and the Corps will soon remove the heavy equipment. An event to celebrate the project’s completion will take place in early fall; the Corps will provide the date, time and location in the coming weeks.

Mouth of the Columbia River South Jetty
Fort Stevens State Park
Parking Lot “C”
Attendees must contact the Portland District Public Affairs Office by Aug. 13 at (503) 808-4510 to confirm their attendance. Interested reporters, film crews and photographers are asked to meet at the Fort Stevens parking lot “C” near the South Jetty.
Because this is a working construction site, steel-toed boots and safety vests are required. Hard hats and safety glasses will be available if media representatives do not have them. The Fort Stevens State Park is located off of Oregon State Highway 101, 10 miles west of Astoria.
The Corps of Engineers performed the interim repairs to fix past damage by waves and storms to the North and South jetties. The jetties protect the federal navigation channel that serves ships navigating the mouth of the Columbia River. These interim repairs have stabilized the most severely damaged portions of the jetties until a major rehabilitation project begins.
