Camp Abbot Draft Final Site Inspection report complete

Public Information meeting April 18

PORTLAND, Ore. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contractor Shaw Environmental has provided the Draft Final Site Inspection (SI) report of former Camp Abbot located in Deschutes County, near Bend, Ore. Camp Abbot is a Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) that had historically been used for military training.

A copy of the report is available on the web at https://www.nwp.usace.army.mil/pa/fuds. The Corps will consult with stakeholders to discuss the report content and possible further actions. A public informational meeting is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday, April 18, at the Sunriver Resort, Greathall Conference Center, Heritage Rooms I and II, Sunriver, Ore. to provide the public an overview of the report.

The report is the product of SI field activities, conducted in September 2006. Field activities included a site reconnaissance to look for evidence of sites suspected of containing munitions and explosives of concern (MEC) or munitions constituents (MC). Samples were collected from groundwater, surface water, sediment and surface soil.

Bill Graney, Corps project manager said. “The SI report will be used to determine what future work the Corps may do to clean-up possible munitions related components and chemical constituents used during combat engineer training,” The Corps of Engineers cleans up sites contaminated with hazardous waste, radioactive waste, and/or ordnance to comply with federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations, he added.

Camp Abbot was constructed in 1942 and served as a training facility designed to train combat engineers in a simulated combat environment. By June 1944, the camp was abandoned and most of the settlement razed.

More information will be available on the former Camp Abbot as it comes available on Portland District’s website at https://www.nwp.usace.army.mil/pa/fuds.
