Review process to be complete by mid-March
PORTLAND, Ore. – The Camp Adair Military Munitions Response Program preliminary Site Investigation (SI) report is being reviewed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Shaw Environmental provided the preliminary (SI) report to the Corps last week of the former Camp Adair and Adair Air Force Station, located in parts of Polk and Benton counties, near Corvallis, Ore. Camp Adair is a Formerly Used Defense Site that had historically been used for military training.
The Corps will review the report and provide comment to the contractor before the draft report is released to the public in mid-March. A copy of the preliminary report Executive Summary is available on the web at https://www.nwp.usace.army.mil/pa/fuds. Following release of the draft report the Corps will consult with stakeholders to discuss the report’s content and possible further actions. A public informational meeting will be scheduled in late March or early April to present the findings to the public.
Site Investigation field activities, conducted in September 2006, included a site reconnaissance to look for evidence of sites suspected of containing munitions and explosives of concern or munitions constituents. Samples were collected from groundwater, surface water, sediment and surface soil.
“The SI report will be used to determine what future work the Corps may do to clean-up possible munitions related components and chemical constituents used during combat engineer training,” said Bill Graney, Corps project manager. The Corps of Engineers cleans up former defense sites contaminated with hazardous waste, radioactive waste, and/or ordnance to comply with federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations.

Camp Adair was constructed in 1942 and served as a training facility for several army divisions. The camp was demolished in 1947. During the short operation of the camp it was the second largest city in Oregon .bat environment. By June 1944, the camp was abandoned and most of the settlement razed.
