Portland, Ore.-The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers invites the public to visit the new and improved exhibits and displays at Seufert Visitors Center near The Dalles Dam.
The new displays are a result of the second phase of a long-term planning effort, which started in the mid 1990s. The first phase of the work included new exhibits at The Dalles Dam fish ladder, in Patterson Park, at the old entrance to the Dalles-Celilo canal and in the powerhouse lobby.
All the exhibits are designed for universal access and replace displays that were 20-plus years old.
The visitors center is open from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.Wednesdays through Sundays from Sept. 4 through Oct. 27.
Other new features include a train car exhibit; a brochure and an introductory DVD movie to be shown in a small newly built theater. Still to come are exhibits in the fish viewing room and the powerhouse.
Visitors to the center also can take a guided tour of The Dalles Dam and powerhouse by train. The Seufert Tour Train departs from the visitors center every half hour during normal hours of operation.
Due to current security measures train-passengers will not be allowed to have carry-on items. The train will not stop at Patterson Park.
The Dalles Dam is located 2 miles east of the city of The Dalles. To reach The Dalles Vistitors Center, take exit 87 from I-84 onto Route 197 north, or Route 197 south from Washington State Highway 14, then proceed east on Clodfelter Way.
