Portland, Ore.-While working on the Columbia River near Wauna, Ore., the crew from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Dredge Essayons identified a ruptured hydraulic line above the hopper of the dredge.
The ruptured line dumped about 300 gallons of water-soluble hydraulic oil, Mobile DTE 15M, into the hopper of the dredge. All of the oil was contained in the hopper and was not released into the river.
The line rupture was identified at about 4 p.m. Saturday.
Dredge Captain Frank Corwin notified the U.S. Coast Guard National Response Center, Oregon Department of Environmental Quality and Washington Department of Ecology shortly after the rupture. The crew worked through the night and repaired the ruptured line. Currently, the Dredge Essayons is moving to Astoria where a contractor, Cowlitz Cleansweep, will begin removing and cleaning the hydraulic oil from the hopper.
