Corps reviews permits for Klamath County, Ore.

PORTLAND, Ore. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is reviewing two applications requesting a Department of the Army permit for certain work in waters of the United States.

Public Notice 200500048, requested by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The project is located near the city of Chiloquin, in Klamath County, approximately 30 miles north of Klamath Falls. The proposed action would entirely remove Chiloquin Dam from the Sprague River. Removal of the dam will result in abandoning a portion of the Modoc Point Irrigation District Main Canal, requiring construction of an alternative system to supply irrigation water to affected water users. Project construction would begin in July 2006, with dam removal occurring from July 2007 through December 2007. The purpose of the project is to improve fish passage on the Sprague River to contribute to the recovery of endangered species. Comments must be received by Dec. 14, 2005. A copy of the public notice may be found at https://www.nwp.usace.army.mil/op/g/docs/notices/200500048.pdf.

Public Notice 200500696, requested by the Oregon Department of Transportation. The project is located southeast of Klamath Falls on a 43-acre parcel immediately south of State Highway 140, on the north side of Lost River, in Klamath County. The proposed action would establish a wetland mitigation bank for the purpose of meeting the requirements for compensatory mitigation associated with projects in the Bridge Delivery and Statewide Transportation Improvement Programs. Comments must be received by Dec. 14, 2005. A copy of the public notice may be found at https://www.nwp.usace.army.mil/op/g/docs/notices/200500696.pdf. The Corps of Engineers is soliciting comments from the public, federal, state and local agencies, Indian Tribes and other interested parties on these permit requests. The Corps will issue or deny any permit under authority of Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, for discharge of dredged or fill material into U.S. waters, and/or under Section 10 of the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1899 for work in or affecting navigable waters of the United States.
