Lewis and Clark commemoration at Bonneville Lock and Dam

PORTLAND, Ore. – Join the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in commemorating the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery this weekend, Oct. 22 and 23, at Bonneville Lock and Dam.

Programs are planned for visitors of all ages and interests. The Oregon Visitor Center on Bradford Island will offer films, programs and interpretive activities highlighting the Lewis and Clark expedition.

The visitor center on the Washington side will show the film, “Confluence of Time and Courage,” from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, with additional showings the following weekend, Oct. 29 and 30, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Park rangers will discuss the expedition’s plant discoveries and preservation of specimens, events in the Columbia River Gorge, and how the Corps of Discovery survived the long journey across the country. The programs also will show how Army values aided in the success of the mission. A discovery trunk with many replica items used by the explorers will be available, including explanations and demonstrations.

These programs will complement existing exhibits on Lewis and Clark in the Cascades, as well as prints about the expedition by noted western artist, Charles M. Russell.

Learn more about what the Corps of Engineers has to offer by viewing our Pacific Northwest map of Lewis and Clark sites. Educational materials and products are available for purchase in the Northwest Interpretive Association Bookstore.

Bonneville Lock and Dam is located 40 miles east of Portland. Take Interstate 84 to exit 40 or Washington State Route 14 to Mile Post 40. For additional information about Bonneville Lock and Dam, please call (541) 374-8820.

More Lewis and Clark events will be held at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center during the last week of October.

Discovery Expedition, a group of Lewis and Clark re-enactors, will arrive in the Columbia Gorge Monday, Oct. 24, and will camp in the area through Friday, Oct. 28, living as those on the historic Lewis and Clark journey did 200 years ago.

Then, the Corps of Discovery II: 200 Years to the Future will offer several informative and entertaining events and exhibits, highlighted by the National Park Service Tent of Many Voices, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, Oct. 28 through Monday, Oct. 31. Call (541) 296-8600 for more information.
