Corps of Engineers closes Foster Road

Portland, Ore.—The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will close Foster Road today, Monday, Aug. 22, through Wednesday, Aug. 24, as it repairs the low-speed gear boxes for the spillway gates on Foster Dam in Sweet Home. Alternate routes motorists can use are: to the west via North River Road and Pleasant Valley Road or to the east via North River Road and Quartville Road to U.S. Hwy 20.

Although this maintenance work was planned, the road closure decision was made at the last-minute in the interest of public safety.

“The closer we came to the maintenance work, the more uncomfortable we were about keeping the road open,” said Erik Petersen, Willamette Valley Project operations manager. “We know this is an inconvenience and I apologize for it. But, I would rather inconvenience people than put them in harm’s way.”

Foster Dam and reservoir regulate the flow from the nearby Green Peter Dam. The dam provides flood damage reduction, irrigation, power generation, recreation and improved navigation downstream.
