MCR North Jetty construction zone off limits to public

Portland, Ore.— Anglers and visitors to Cape Disappointment State Park near the Mouth of the Columbia River are reminded to stay out of the construction zone for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ repair of the north jetty.

The construction zone includes the jetty access road from Cape Disappointment State Park to Benson Beach and much of the jetty itself.

The jetty access road is closed to foot and bicycle traffic Monday thru Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., until Oct. 31. To mitigate for the construction-related closure, the Corps, in coordination with Washington State Parks, has created a temporary parking lot for access to Benson Beach.

Pamphlets showing a map of the construction zone, as well as the available parking lot, are available at the Cape Disappointment State Park or by calling the Corps at (503) 808-4510.

The Corps awarded a contract in April 2005 for $4.9 million to repair the jetty, which is severely damaged in areas and at risk of breaching. Contractor Tapani Underground of Battleground, Wash., should complete the work by Oct. 31, 2005.

The Corps discourages anyone from climbing on the jetty for any reason. The jetty’s open crevasse, sinkholes, caverns, slippery rock surfaces, sudden large waves and strong currents all pose dangers, some visible and some hidden.
