Contract awarded for repair of MCR's North Jetty

Portland, Ore. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded a contract to repair the North Jetty at the mouth of the Columbia River.

Tapani Underground, Inc., of Battleground, Wash., was awarded the contract for $4,889,000 for mobilization and placement of jetty stone material. Tapani’s bid price of $17,653,000 also included costs for repairing the South Jetty at the mouth of the Columbia River. That work will not be initiated until next fiscal year, subject to availability of federal funds.

Other bidders included: Roglin’s Inc., of Aberdeen, Wash.; Kerr Contractors of Woodburn, Ore.; Quiqq Bros., Inc., of Aberdeen, Wash.; Kiewit Pacific Co., of Vancouver, Wash.; and Jay Cashman, Inc., of Quincy, Mass.

The Corps expects to provide Tapani, Inc., with the notice to proceed within a week to 10 days. Repair of the North Jetty should be completed by the end of October. About 71,000 tons of stone will be required to repair the most severely damaged sections of the North jetty. The average specified size for individual jetty stones for the North Jetty is 10-tons. Tapani Underground plans to transport the jetty material to the site from various quarry sources by truck.

During construction, access to areas near the North jetty may be closed to the public for safety reasons. Closures will be coordinated with the Washington State Parks Department.
