Small oil spill reported at The Dalles Dam

Portland, Ore.-Powerhouse operators at The Dalles Dam discovered an oil spill near generating units at the dam’s powerhouse at about 11 this morning. Maintenance crews estimate that less than one quart of oil was released into the Columbia River, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced today.

Crew members placed containment booms around the oil; they are working to pinpoint the source of the leak and to confirm the type of oil, though they suspect turbine oil.

The absorbent pads used on the boom will be disposed of via the Corps’ waste disposal contractor. -30-
