Bonneville Dam visitor centers to close for holidays

Portland, Ore. The Portland District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, announced today that visitor facilities at the Bonneville Lock and Dam project, 40 miles east of Portland on the Columbia River, will be closed to the general public at noon on Thursday, Dec. 24. The entire Bonneville Project will be closed on Christmas Day, Dec. 25.

The Project will reopen on Saturday, Dec. 26, and visitor facilities will resume normal operating hours, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. The Project also will be closed on New Years Day. The Bonneville Project is open seven days a week all year, except for closures on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Day.

These closures effect all visitors' facilities and also fishing areas on Bradford Island and Robins Island.

"On the Oregon side of the Bonneville Project, fishing areas at Tanner Creek, Bradford Island and Robins Island will close when the entire Project closes at 5 p.m. on Dec. 24th," said Pat Barry, park ranger. "All of the fishing areas, including Tanner Creek, will be closed on Christmas and New Years Day."

On the Washington side of the Bonneville Project, access to the Hamilton Island Boat Ramp is available 24 hours a day and the North Shore fishing areas are open from dawn until dusk. The exception is the Garrison Eddy fishing area just upstream from the boat ramp. That site was closed last year when construction began on a juvenile salmon bypass system in that area.

The Corps of Engineers invites the public to visit Bonneville on all the other days of the year.
