Portland, Ore. -- The public is invited to join the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Bonneville Lock and Dam on the Columbia River 40 miles east of Portland on Aug. 30, Sept. 6 and Sept. 13, for guided fish ladder walks.
The fall salmon run typically peaks around the end of August or in early September, so those dates are perfect times for showing your children the Northwest's famous salmon runs at Bonneville Dam.
Tours led by Corps rangers will leave from the Washington Shore Visitor Center at 2 p.m. on each of those days. During the 45-minute tours, visitors will walk along the quarter-mile-long fish ladder and learn about fish passage at Bonneville Dam.
The walks will end in the fish viewing building where an underwater view of the ladders will give visitors an opportunity to get up close to migrating adult salmon.
The fish ladder walks are free of charge. They are part of Washington Water Weeks '98, a five-week-long series of activities and events which offers the public the opportunity to join fun, educational activities such as the fish ladder walks.
To reach the Washington Shore Visitor Center, take Washington State Highway 14, and exit at milepost 40. For more information about the fish ladder walks at Bonneville Dam, call the Washington Shore Visitor Center at (509) 427-4281, or the Bradford Island Visitor Center at (541) 374-8820.
