Portland, Ore. -- Free train and boat rides will be only part of the fun at the annual open house at The Dalles Lock and Dam on the Columbia River on Saturday, April 25.
The public is invited to make the Dam part of their itinerary at The Dalles annual Cherry Blossom Festival, and to enjoy the train and boat rides from 10:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. The tour train will leave the Seufert Park Visitor Center every 30 minutes beginning at 10:30 a.m. Visitors will see the fish ladder and powerhouse, and, at the fish counting station, they may be able to see chinook salmon moving through the ladders.
Boat rides will leave The Dalles boat basin every hour on the half-hour, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Water safety demonstrations will be given throughout the day at The Dalles boat basin.
At the powerhouse, there will be special equipment displays, videos and tours of the control room and turbine floor. There also will be a special emergency response display below the fish ladder.
Visitors to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project also will be able to visit the 4.5 megawatt generator operated by the Northern Wasco County People's Utility District. The PUDs generating plant is near the navigation lock.
