Portland, Ore. -- The Portland District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, is hosting an open house and educational forum from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 26, for high school students and teachers interested in engineering or the sciences. The Society of American Military Engineers is co-hosting the event in honor of National Engineers Week, Feb. 22-28.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is one of the nation's largest public engineering organizations, with a broad set of missions and capabilities, such as water and natural resource management, fisheries enhancement, navigation, flood damage reduction, environmental restoration and hydroelectric power. The agency supports a number of engineering disciplines, including civil (structural, hydraulic, environmental), mechanical, electrical, geotechnical, chemical and safety engineering.
Students and teachers alike will have an opportunity to talk face to face with a number of engineers from some of these fields, as well as see first-hand how a large engineering organization works.
During the event, engineers will present demonstrations to promote their careers as rewarding and challenging for both men and women. In addition, students also will have the opportunity to learn about engineering design, GIS and hydrosurveys.
For a less formal learning environment, students and teachers are invited to a brown-bag luncheon where students can talk with engineers about their career choices, or other topics of their choosing.
For more information about this event, to sign up or to volunteer as a teacher/chaperone for the event, please call Taunja Berquam, civil engineer, Geotechnical Engineering Branch, at (503) 808-4864, or Heidi Helwig, Public Affairs Office, at (503) 808-4510.
