Corps reminds public to report crime at Oregon recreation areas

PORTLAND, Ore. – With vandalism and theft of metal on the rise in Oregon’s recreation areas, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reminds the public about it’s deterrence program to protect Corps property throughout the Columbia Gorge, Willamette Valley and Rogue River basins.

To help fight property crime and reduce costs, the Corps has received Congressional authority to offer cash rewards up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of individuals causing damage to Corps property.

Each year, millions of dollars worth of property are lost nationwide due to vandalism, larceny, arson, and environmental and cultural degradation. “Replacing stolen equipment and repairing damages caused by vandalism is expensive and diverts taxpayer dollars from maintenance and upgrades to our critical infrastructure,” said Doug Dailey, Corps security specialist. “These types of crimes are on the rise and affect everyone in our communities.”

Individuals who witness or suspect that a crime has been committed against Corps property are encouraged to call the toll-free Corps Watch number, (866) 413-7970, to report information about theft, vandalism or any threats or suspicious activity against the Corps. The Corps Watch number is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and callers can remain anonymous.

“This program is designed to get the public involved in helping protect our limited resources against the serious impacts of crime within and around dams, navigation locks, lakes, recreation and cultural areas, and other Corps facilities,” continued Dailey. “It is important to note, however, that this program does not replace the 911 emergency notification system. Those observing a crime in progress should call 911 immediately followed with a call to the Corps Watch toll-free number.”

For more information on the Corps Watch Program, call Doug Dailey, Security and Law Enforcement Office, (503) 808-4441, or Ismael Caballero, Operations Division, (503) 808-4325.
