Corps seeks comments on Florence permit application

PORTLAND, Ore. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is seeking comments on an application for a permit to conduct work in waters of the United States. The public notice regarding this permit application was issued during the week of March 16, 2008.

Public Notice NWP-1997-1360 describes a proposal by the Port of Siuslaw to perform maintenance dredging of their commercial basin, sport boat moorage basin, transient dock and public launch ramp in Florence, Ore.

The proposal calls for dredging up to 70,000 cubic yards of sediments over 10 years. The applicant proposes transplanting eel grass beds in the basins to near the mouth of Munsel Creek as compensatory mitigation.

The Corps is soliciting comments on this proposal from the public; federal, state and local agencies; Indian Tribes; and other interested parties. The public notice which provides more information is available at http://www.nwp.usace.army.mil/op/g/public.asp. Comments must be received by April 15.

The Corps issues or denies permits under authority of Section 404 of the Clean Water Act for discharge of dredged or fill material into U.S. waters, and/or Section 10 of the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1899 for work in or affecting navigable waters of the United States.
