Columbia River navigation shut down at John Day (river mile 216)

PORTLAND, Ore. — Due to a barge coming into contact with the upstream navigation lock gate at the John Day Dam at about 11 p.m. Thursday, river traffic is shut down at river mile 216 until further notice.

No injuries were reported as a result of the incident, but initial reports from lock operators with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers indicate the contact has caused significant damage to the facility.

Crews will continue assessing the damage today. The US Coast Guard has dispatched a team of investigators from Portland to aid in the investigation.

A more thorough account will be provided later today.
