Site inspection expected to last three weeks
PORTLAND, Ore. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contractor Shaw Environmental will begin next week a site inspection of former Camp Abbot in Deschutes County. Camp Abbot is a Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) that had historically been used for military training.
The Corps will conduct a Military Munitions Response Program (MMRP) Site Inspection (SI), according to Corps project manager Mike Nelson. “The SI will be used to determine what future work the Corps may do to clean-up possible munitions related components and chemical constituents used during combat engineer training,” he said. The Corps of Engineers cleans up sites contaminated with hazardous waste, radioactive waste, and/or ordnance to comply with federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations.
The work to be performed will include access to and a visual inspection of property that was part of the former Camp Abbot. The inspection may also include soil and/or water sampling.
In preparation to begin the SI work, the Corps contacted property owners of the former Camp Abbot site and obtained signed Department of the Army Right of Entry Environmental Assessment and Response (ROE). “The ROE from a property owner allows the Corps and its contractor to perform the required work.” Nelson said. “Also, property owners will be contacted within 48-hours prior to any work being done on their property.”
Camp Abbot was constructed in 1942 and served as a training facility designed to train combat engineers in a simulated combat environment. By June 1944, the camp was abandoned and most of the settlement razed.
