Oil Spill at The Dalles Dam

Portland, Ore. – Operators of The Dalles Lock and Dam on the Columbia River are reporting a 200-gallon oil spill today, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The spill occurred just before 5 p.m. today as crews were draining water from one of the dam’s generating units.

Officials have notified the National Response Center and state environmental agencies, and Corps maintenance crews have stopped additional oil from entering the river.

Due to high water flow at The Dalles, estimated at more than 300,000 cubic feet per second, crews were unable to contain or recover any of the spilled oil. Workers from the dam are surveying the river downstream of the dam for any signs of the oil.
