Corps seeks former Camp Abbot Rights of Entry by April 28--site inspection planned for this summer

PORTLAND, Ore. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers sent 65 Real Estate Right of Entry forms last week to property owners in the former Camp Abbot area near Sunriver, Ore. Entry rights are required in order for the Corps to conduct a Military Munitions Response Program (MMRP) Site Investigation (SI) related to the former Camp Abbot which was located on what is now Sunriver and Forest Service property. This investigation is intended to establish whether munitions and/or munitions-related constituents are present.

The Corps is asking property owners to mail their completed forms back by April 28. “We would like to have the completed forms back by the end of the month to facilitate a timely, smooth flow in preparing our site inspection plan,” said Bill Graney, project manager.

The SI will begin as early as July with the findings reported by the end of the calendar year. Public meetings are tentatively planned for July and October of this year. The SI will be done by a Corps contractor, Shaw Environmental. The work to be performed will include access to and a visual inspection of property that was part of the former Camp Abbot. The inspection may also include limited soil and or water sampling, according to Graney.

Camp Abbot was constructed in 1942 and served as a facility designed to train combat engineers in a simulated combat environment. By June 1944, the camp was abandoned and most of the settlement razed.

More information will be available on the former Camp Abbot as it comes available on Portland District’s website at https://www.nwp.usace.army.mil/pa/fuds/abbott.
