PORTLAND, Ore. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is seeking comments from the public on six proposed interim action alternatives to remove contaminated sediments from Bradford Island at Bonneville Lock and Dam. Written comments on the proposed interim action must be postmarked by March 3.
The proposed interim action alternatives are described in detail in the draft Engineer Evaluation and Cost Analysis (EE/CA) report. The report is available for review on the web at https://www.nwp.usace.army.mil/issues/bradford/documents. Copies of the EE/CA will be available for review at the North Bonneville Library and Cascade Locks City Hall.
Written comments should be addressed to Bob Schwarz, Project Manager, Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, 400 E. Scenic Drive, Suite 307, The Dalles, OR 97058. Email comments should be addressed to Schwarz.bob@deq.state.or.us.
A public informational meeting is scheduled for Feb. 21 at Rock Creek Community Center, located at 710 SW Rock Creek Dr., Stevenson, WA, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The meeting will provide an update on the Bradford Island cleanup, proposed interim action and an opportunity for community members to express their interest in participating in a Community Action Committee.
The Corps has been investigating and doing cleanup work at Bradford Island since 1997 when they entered into a voluntary agreement with DEQ, and has elected to use the requirements and process of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act to complete any necessary removal and cleanup activities.
