Corps report released on economic impacts of recreation at Oregon parks

Portland, Ore.-Spending associated with recreational activities at 18 Oregon coastal and river ports plays a significant role in Oregon's economy, according to a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers report.

The report concluded that in 2002, port-related recreation activities provided $109 million in sales, $42 million in personal income and 1,700 jobs to the state's economy.

It also concluded that in 2002, more than 700,000 recreation visits were made to Oregon port communities, resulting in $75 million in trip spending and $31 million in boat-related durable goods and other fixed costs.

"This report highlights contributions of recreational use to the economy and provides a regional economic modeling tool for Oregon's coastal and river communities to use in the planning and implementing of economic development goals," said Tim Kuhn, Corps regional economist.

As part of a study funded by Oregon ports, Oregon Economic and Community Development Department (OECDD) and the Corps of Engineers, the report characterizes the regional economic significance of recreational use of Oregon ports, including 36 marinas and boat launch sites.

The study was performed by the Corps' Engineer Research Development Center, with assistance from the Department of Forest Resources at Oregon State University, OECDD and all 18 participating ports.

"Oregon ports have always been heavy contributors to our economy," said Marty Brantley, director of OECDD. "We expect that to continue."
